Am I a dental implant candidate? I have advanced periodontal disease.

Monday, August 10th, 2009

I have about 6-7 implants, I recently lost one front natural tooth and have a receding gum line and advanced peridontal disease. Can all this be repaired? I really do not want false teeth if I can help it. I have the funds to move forward . Is this something that can be taken care of?

Dan,
Yes, if you are in basically good general health, you are a dental implant candidate. Your case needs to be handled carefully, because you don’t want the periodontal disease you have on your natural teeth to infect the dental implants. One of the reasons for dental implant failure is implant infection. So be sure that your implant dentist has good credentials, such as being a member of the International College of Oral Implantology (ICOI). Don’t look for the least expensive dentist, and be wary if your dentist suggests shortcuts or seems to be too anxious to do things in a hurry.

Not enough bone for an implant

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

I recently cracked the root of my front tooth which became infected and resulted in a loss of bone mass (I left it in too long). For an implant I need more bone. Is it possible for this bone to grow back? I am in my mid 30’s and very healthy non smoker/drinker. Thank you for your time.

Susan,
You can almost always have bone grafted into the implant site. Many dentists don’t feel comfortable doing this — it requires an extra level of expertise. Dr. Chal does these kinds of cases all the time. If you look around in your area, I believe you can find an implant dentist who can help you with this. Yes, there is extra expense involved, but the implant will end up being solid and trouble free. Even if you were to skip the implant and have a dental bridge, the lack of bone would make the false tooth look fake, because your jaw would be sunken in at that location.
